What is the Via Algarviana?

What is the Via Algarviana

The Via Algarviana is a long distance tour (300km), classified as Big Route (GR13). It starts in Alcoutim, near the Guadiana River, and ends at the Cape S. Vicente, County Vila do Bispo, passing through the Caldeirão and Monchique mountains, crossing mainly forest areas, through various small villages, where they still maintain many rural traditions.

The Via Algarviana consists of 14 sectors. Depending the walkers preference or physical condition, there is the possibility to gather two sectors or to divide a single sector . Sometimes this is required by lack of nearby acommodation. In the end this adjustment can influence the global duration of the crossing.

Praia dos Pescadores Pontoon

This pontoon in of the favorite spots for fishermen and is a great place for diving in the sea, and also has a great view of the beach.

Pintor Samora Barros Art Gallery
Former power station, the building is located in Largo Eng.º Duarte Pacheco and is dated from the beginning of the century, 1926.
In 1988, was reabilitated and transformed in a Art Gallery. It has two floors and exterior arches, which allow the Natural illumination of all the building. Of its facade, highlight the tiles and exterior grounds, designed by the albufeirense painter, Samora Barros.

St. Sebastião Church and Museum of Sacred Art
The St. Sebastião Church was built in the middle of the eighteenth century, and is located in the Miguel Bombarda Square. It only has one nave and highlights the baroque style of it's outer door. It mantains in the inside a a wooden altar of the second half of the eighteenth century. and different images of saints.

Main Church
The Nossa Senhora da Conceição Main Church was built in the eighteenth century, and was consecrated in the 15th July of 1800 by the Algarve bishop, Francisco Gomes de Avelar. It is located in the Igreja Nova Street and substituted the old Church that was razed by the 1755 earthquake. It is neoclassical and it's plant has a single nave with four side chapels, baptismal chapel, choir, two pulpits and two side rooms. Upon the facade is the Cross of Avis. Stands in the high altar a painting attributed to the albufeirense painter Samora Barros that serves as background to the image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, patron saint of Albufeira.

Sant'Ana Church
The Sant'Ana Church was built inthe eighteenth century, and is located in the Jacinto d´Ayet Square. In the chancel is an altarpiece attributed to the masters Francisco Xavier Guedelha and João Baptista. Also stands inside an altarpiece of Nossa Senhora das Dores and an image of the crucified Christ carved in wood.

St. Vicente Statue

St. Vicente of Albufeira is a monument in memory to Frei Vicente of Santo António, a great man born in Albufeira in 1590. It is located in the Jacinto d'Ayet Square.

Municipal Archeology Museum (Old City Hall)
The Municipal Alcheology Museum of Albufeira is located in the old city area, in the building in wich until the 80s decade worked as City Hall. Inside has several study and conservation rooms, and a library. The exhibits range from its remotest origins to the seventeenth century, and are divided into four main centers, pre-history, Roman period, the Islamic period and the modern age. Noteworthy are the architectural remains found in the Roman town of Retorta and the Necropolis of Morgado da Lameira.

Music Conservatory (Old Hospital) and Archaeological Center
The conservatory was founded in 1996, and has already realized tens of concerts in several places in Portugal and in foreign countries. It started it pedagogical activity with the opening of the Music and dance Schools of Albufeira. The courses offered by the School of Music have Pedagogical Parallelism at the level of Basic Courses of the Ministry of Education, where you can learn: singing, guitar, violin, piano, among others. Next to the conservatory is the Archaeological Center and is also possible to see the excavations that are being conducted on this site.

Santa Casa da Misericórdia
According to the oral tradition of some authors, its foundation dates back to the year of 1499. It is considered as one of the brotherhoods imposed by the Queen D. Leonor, by the fact that Albufeira is the only county in the Algarve that belonged to the Order of Aviz. It's vocation for social assistance, makes the Santa Casa da Misericordia de Albufeira an important institution in helping the disadvantaged. It has 20 valence distributed by Homes for the Elderly, Day Care, support for the disabled, among others.

Cantor Cellar

Located near the Algarve Shopping, this cellar was built to produce the wine Vida Nova and Onda Nova, from three surrounding farms: the Quinta do Moinho, the Quinta do Miradouro and the Quinta Vale do Sobreiro. The goal it to produce the best wine that this region has to offer, combining techniques of traditional production and others more modern and innovative.

Together with wine production, also offers guided tours of the vineyards and winery, with whine tastes, and the opportunity to buy wine and a variety of merchandise.
Sir Cliff Richard, , met and fell in love with the Algarve for over 40 years. His dream of planting a vineyard in his property Quinta do Moinho, was the inspiration for wines Vida Nova, and he is involved in the production of the whine. When he is in Portugal is usual to see him with his hands dirty in the vines or even stepping on grapes in the Cellar.

Albufeira Marina
Considered the most secure and sheltered Marina of Portugal and inserted in a touristic high quality complex, where green spaces are predominant and only 29% of the area of implantation is destined to construction, the Marina of Albufeira includes in its project hotels, restaurants, bars, stores, pools, apartaments, housing, diversion center and leisure.
Located in the center of the Algarve, the Marina of Albufeira marks a diference, namely in terms of arquitectonical functional conception, in relation to previous designed projects.
The marina itself has a entrance channel, with 25 meters wide, an area for tall ships with 1,6 hectares, and an area for medium vessels with 5 hectares.

Nossa Senhora da Guia Chapel
Baroque style, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia preserved inside a gilded baroque altarpiece, in which can be foundthe image of Nossa Senhora da Guia. It is considered has the most representative baroque witness in the Algarve and one of the most important monuments of artistic valuein the Municipality of Albufeira.

Guia Main Church

The Guia Main Church, small village of the Municipality of Albufeira, is a building constructed in the seventeenth century. In it's interior houses pictures of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. From the Seventeenth-century stand images of St. Antonio and the Christ crucified, and from the eighteenth-century images of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Nossa Senhora das Dores and the chancel an altarpiece with the image of Nossa Senhora da Visitação..

St. Sebastião Chapel
Built, possibly, in the beggining of the seventeenth century, this chapel was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake, and was totally rebuilt after 3 years.
The Chapel is dedicated to St. Sebastião, that, according to the legend, was a determinant saint to extinguish the Black Death.

Guia
This village located near Albufeira has several points of interest, being some of the most known the Algarve Shoppingm, Zoomarine and the Main Church. This region is also know by it's gastronomy, namely the chickens of Guia that bring every year thousands of persons to this place.

Zoomarine
An oceanographic park with educational nature. With a filosophy based in conservation and environmental education, the park was inaugurated at 03 august 1991. In it's different shows we find numerous species of animals such as dolphins, seals, sharks, turtles, exotic birds, etc. It has an aquarium and a reabilitation center for Maritime Species, and also all sorts of services, such as restaurants, stores and different atractions.

This equipment, inserted in Parque da Alfarrobeira (north of the Municipal Stadium) was designed and pojected with the main goal of creating the adequate infra-structures to the practice with Skate, BMX Freestyle and Inline Skating, in the strands that are most practiced in Portugal, such as, Street and Ramp, and with different dificulty degrees. It will also have a initiation area, with quarter pipes, flat banks and a learning zone.

Municipal Theatre

In the Municipal Theatre of Faro, near the Forum Algarve, you can find several shows in diferent areas, such as Theatre, Dance, Music, Cinema and New Circus.

Ria Formosa

The Ria Formosa is a protected area designated as Natural Park, and covers the municipalities of Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, covering an area of about 18,400 acres along 60 miles from the river Ancão to the beach of Manta Rota. Here you can find a huge quantity of wildlife and allows you to be in direct contact with Nature.

St. Luís Chapel

St Luís Chapel is a "remarkable" building of Faro.

Small temple located in St. Luís Square, in front of the soccer stadium with the same name, it was built in the seventeenth century as the seat of a small rural coterie (though today the city has already integrated it in the local urban fabric).

Shopping Street

The Shopping Street is located in Faro downtown, near the marina, and here you can find good restaurants, snack bars and several stores with several shops with several items.

Faro Marina

In the Marina of Faro you can enjoy a relaxing tour next to the boats that are here, you can catch the boat to the nearby islands(Culatra, Farol...), you'll find several touristic animation agencies that allow tours in the Ria Formosa or you can take a cultural tour of this part of the city.

Vila Arch

One of the ex-libris of Faro, was ordered to build by the bishop Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar, in the place where once was a medieval gate, and was constructed by the italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri.
The arch marks the entrance of the Vila Adentro, the historic centre of the city, and in it you can see a niche with the image of St. Tomás de Aquino.

Has curiosity, notice the top of the edification, where the storks like to do their nestings.

St. Pedro Church

The primitive Chapel, ordered to build by the Mariners, was totally rebuilt in the middle of the XVI century. Affected by the earthquacke of 1755, was proceded to it's reconstruction. On the façade, the porch is framed by two pairs of Ionic columns that support the cornice topped with a niche with a statue of St. Pedro. Inside, has three naves and head composed of the chancel and two side chapels.

Sé Cathedral of Faro

The Sé Cathedral of Faro, also known as Sé Church or Santa Maria Church, is a "remarkable" building of Faro located in Sé Square.

It was built after the Christian reconquest in 1251 by the Archbishop of Braga D. Joao Viegas. It was later handed over to the Order of St. James.

In 1577 became headquarters of the of the episcopal seat of the Diocese of the Algarve, and a few years later (1596) was been looted and burned by the British troops of the Earl of Essex.

Rebuilt after these events, the earthquakes of 1722 and 1755 motivated other works. The unfinished bell signals the busy life of the building).

In the interior, stands the organ and the carving, while in the exterior should be noted the excellent view, over the city and the estuary, that is possible to have from the top of the bell tower.

D. Afonso III Statue and Municipal Museum

This was the first museum created in the Algarve. In 1894, in the 5th centenary of the birth of Infant D. henrique, the City Hall of Faro inaugurated the Archaeological Museum and Lapidated the Statue of this infant.

In 1914, the estate was transferred to the church of the former Convent of Santo António dos Capuchos and remained there until 1969. The archaeological remains are the most significant, with pieces of prehistory and the Roman and medieval times.Other collection of high quality are the paintings from the XVI to XIX centuries. It is composed mainly of religious specimens that formerly belonged to religious temples in the Algarve.
In November 2005, the Municipal Museum of Faro received the Award for Best Portuguese Museum during the three years 2003-05, awarded by the Portuguese Association of Museology.

Castle

What is left of the Castle, is part of a defensive structure of the city, that has roman origin and was posteriorly reinforced by the arabs.
The castle seems to have been rebuilt, after the cristian reconquest of the Peninsula, over the Alcazaba that has muslim origin.

In 1596, Faro suffers an attack of the british forces, and is sacked and burned, having to be the target of reconstruction work over several years and in the seventeenth century, more works are done to adapt the castle and city walls for the use of artillery.
In the eighteenth century, the castle was headquarters of the Artillery Regiment of the Kingdom of the Algarve and in the late nineteenth century, was leased to a company that turned it into a alcohol factory.

The changes made to function as a factory, much misrepresented the castle, which was also a victim of the opening of a street through the walls, the current Castle Street.

Carmo Church

The Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church or Carmo Church is a "remarkable" building of Faro, located in Carmo Square.
It was founded in 1713 by Bishop D.António Pereira da Silva, but the responsible for the initial project was the priest Frei Manuel da Conceição, of Lisbon. the middle of the century the building underwent major renovation and additions, having been destroyed the original facade.The new layout was designed by master mason Diogo Gonçalves, in 1747. The works extended until 1878 (namely with the construction of the facade towers).

In the Interior you can see the sacristy decoration, the "acervo de imaginária da Procissão do Triunfo" and a Bones Chapel.

Live Science Center of Faro

A center where the visitor is invited to participate and discover the real and virtual world, through a exposition about the sun, navigation in CyberSpace, planet observation and Mediatheque.

Quarteira's Fishermen Port

In the Fishermen Port you can find the typical boats that the fishermen of this region use in the high seas. There are many different activities along the day. In the morning is pretty interesting to see the arrival of the boats with thousands of seagulls that are searching to obtain some food. At the afternoon you can see the fishermen preparing and fixing the nets that they later use to catch the fish, while you enjoy the contact with the sound of the sea birds and the maritime breeze. At the end of the day you can see the fishermen leaving to the high seas from where they'll only return in the following morning.

Nossa Senhora da Conceição Shrine (Immaculate Conceição da Virgem Santa Maria)

In this shrine you will find the holy patron of Quarteira and it's fishermen. It is located in the Fishermen Port and it is said to have been collected by some fishermen nets in high seas over 200 years ago.

Quarteira's Calçadão

Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church

Convent built in 1554 for the "Carmelitas Calçadas" in the place where was the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Chapel since 1463. From the 1755 earthquake survived the Church of one nave, nave, vaulted entrance lane, with a rectangular chancel surmounted by a dome with lantern, in which there is a barred window where the nuns watched the divine offices.

Santa Maria da Graça Church Site

It was in this site that existed the Nossa Senhora da Graça Church, that was destroyed by the earthquacke of 1755. It was here that the Infant D. Henrique was buried before it's remains were transfered to the Mosteiro da Batalha.

Belvedere and St. Gonçalo de Lagos Statue

Lagos Fort or Ponta da Bandeira Fort

The fort, of maritime type, presenta a quadrangular plant and, in each vertexwhere risen cylindrical watchtowers in 1960.

The inner access is through a lifting bridge and also through the arms gate, in stone.
Inside there is a chapel, internally covered with tiles. Actually it has a Art Gallery.

Infant D. Henrique Statue

Infant Dom Henrique, Duke of Viseu, (1394 - 1460) was a portuguese prince and the most important figure of the beginning of the Discoveries era, also known as Infant of Sagres or Navigator. Born in1394 in Oporto, the prince D. Henrique was the fifth son of the King D. João I, (founder of the Avis Dinasty) and Dona Filipa de Lencastre.

Slave Market

The Slave Market is located in Rua da Graça, Praça Infante D. Henrique. In the XV century, was used to exchange the first slaves brought from Africa. Nowadays is used to show several temporary expositions.

Manueline Window

It was in this window that the King D. Sebastião watched in 1579 his last mass, before leaving to the battle of Alcácer-Quibir, where he died.

Santa Maria Church

In 1498 was built the Misericórdia Church, in which was addorsed the hospital later in the same house. It suffered restaurations and ampliations in the XVI and XVII centuries, and eventually was established parish church dedicated to Santa Maria, when the old temple of the parish was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. It has a symmetrical facade, flanked by two bell towers that highlight this symmetry.The interior is enhanced by a retabulistic from the 2nd half of the XVIII century and a wooden cover profusely carved. The side door is from the Renaissance era.

St. António Church

Probably built in the reign of D. João V, was constructed to serve as a cult site to the military stationed in Lagos, belonging to the military administration. Damaged in the 1755 earthquake, was recovered in by order of Hugo Beaty, commander of the infantry regiment of Lagos.

In the beggining of the XX century, the church, still under military administration was in a state of preservation rather unfortunate, since water leakage in the roof was damaging the painting of the dome, the walled choir and gilded. Dua to financial problems, it was not possible to carry out the repair of the building. In 1924,the church was classified as National Monument. In 1929, ceases to belong to the War Ministery, and starts being administrated by the passando a ser administrado pelo Ministry of Public Instruction. The repairs, supervised by Dr. José Formosinho, began in 1930. Since then, the church started to a part of the Regional Museum of Lagos. In 1931, the Sacred Art section of the Regional Museum of Lagos was installed in the sacristy of the Church.
Nowadays, it only provides religious services once a year, in the day of its patron (June 13th). The Curch is part of the Dr. José Formosinho Museum.

Municipal Museum Dr. José Formosinho

Installed in an anex building to the Santo António Church, was founded in 1932, by initiative of it's patron, Dr. José dos Santos Pimenta Formosinho. It Desenvolved through combined efforts, with constant donations. The As archaeological excavations realizaded by it's founder, by Abel Viana and Octávio da Veiga Ferreira revealed of extreme importance to the enrichment of the collections. This is evidence of pre-and proto-historic, Roman, Arabic and Portuguese. In the entrance At the entrance boasts a Renaissance portal, that comes from the Church of the Maritime Compromise, in which was adapted an iron gate run by local artists. Its vast collection is distributed by the departments of Archeology, Religious Art, History of Lagos, Ethnography of the Algarve, Painting, Numismatics, Ethnography Mineralogy and Overseas. It has singular collections and museographic pieces unique in Portugal that, by itself, justify a visit. The entrance in the Museum allows the access to the interior of the Santo António Church, an authentic jewel of the gilded Baroque in Portugal. Schedule:

St. Sebastião Church and Bones Chapel

Built in the place where existed the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, was transformed in church in the XV century. It suffered ampliations and reconstructions after the 1755 earthquake. It is located in a high area of the city and has a large bell tower with a clock. Inside there's a high ceiling, with three naves separated by Doric columns. It has side Chapels, a bone chapel and a gilded altar, whose crucifix is said to have been in the battle of Alcácer-Quibir. It is classified has National Monument.

Live Science Center

The Lagos Live Science Center project is a initiative of the Lagos City Hall, in response to the stimulation sent by the Live Science - National Agency to the Scientific and technological Culture, in order to constitute in the entire national territory a network of centers aimed at promoting science and technology among the general public and creating a suitable framework for training of youth workers and teachers to support schools, the cooperation between scientific institutions, enterprises, municipalities and educational institutions, and development and production of content and resources for formal and non formal education.

Municipal Market

The Municipal Market is conveniently placed near the center in the Descobrimentos Avenue, with 4 tracks along the riverside walk. The building, built in 1924, was recently restaured.

Marina and Nautical Activities

In the marina you can enjoy a relaxing tour between the luxuous boats that are present here, and you also have access to inumerous nautical atractions in this area.

Boa Esperança Caravel

The Boa Esperança Caravel is a replica has close as possible of a "caravelão" (here the suffix is diminutive) or "caravela quinhentista" of two masts. Was built by experts of naval constrution in wood, according to what is known about the rules of naval construction of that time, but having in attention the modern requesites of safety and confort.
There were used different woods such as pine in the lining, bulwark, keelson and masts, oak and cork on goals, cambola on deck and poop in yards and eucalyptus. The inner access is available to whoever wants to visit.

Ponta da Piedade

No one can resist a tour to Ponta da Piedade, where a lighthouse built over a site where a old Chapel was marks the limit between land and sea.

Next to the Trindade camping park, the way is straight ahead, passing by some areas of touristic equipments. At left, is the Dona Ana Beach, collected between cutted cliffs from this outstanding part of Costa D'Oiro.
The cliffs pockmarked that the sea birds adopt as home, contrasting with the greenish blue of the waters, give them a specific color and transform this beach in a cozy place, protecting it from the Northern wind that uses to refresh Lagos.
The Camilo beach comes in the following of the coastline, and can become a second option to reach the same destiny; next to the cliffs, the sea always accompanies us in endless blue horizons.
Nearby, there are several hidden small beaches. With sometimes difficult access, are the preffered spots to nudists and to whom enjoy specially tranquility.
At the end of the road, the Ponta da Piedade embraces the ocean; a long and straight stairway takes next to the sea, where the oddly sculped rocks decorate a small cove.
The fishermen wait here, in their small gaudy boats, for the passengers that wish to visit the caves, and identify the name of the rocks while search to enter the light caves that the sea built. A good tour always depend of the tide...
Who visits Ponta da Piedade cannot cease to feel the intense luminosity reflected by the sea that carefully beautified this corner of the world, making it a naturally privilleged place.

St. Francisco Monastery

The foundation of St. Francisco Monastery - also known as Nossa Senhora da Esperança - dates from the sixteenth century and is the result of the initiative of Simão Correia, a former Captain of Azamor.
Unfortunatelly, this building suffers from a total neglect in the last decades, period in which its degradation increased, putting at risk what is left of it's architectural structure.

Portimão Museum

In the old canning factory "Feu Hermanos" opened the Portimão Museum – 5000 m2 showing the historical, ethnographic and industrial patrimony of the city and region of Portimão.

The entrance to the Museum is made by Arade River side, where the fish was unloaded, and was taken to the "descabeço" room - the “heart” of the former factory. Here was restaured the washing,transport and the brine tanks, and placed figures representing the canners. In the central basement is still a mighty machine that made the impression in steel plates. It is also shown underwater pieces - cannons and amphorae.
The community is highlighted, specially through objects of the most illustrious person born in Portimão: Manuel Teixeira Gomes, writer, that was President of the Republic from 1923 to 1925. Between several things in his quotidian, exposes the Roman Bust, sculpture made in bronze where he was photographed in 1920, in his office when he performed diplomatic duties in London.
The Museum also has temporary exposition rooms, a documentation center (the most modern in the region), an auditorium and a restauration room .

15 July to 14 September: tuesday – 19h30 to 23h00; from wednesday to sunday – 15h00 to 23h00.

Portimão Arena Pavilion

The Portimão Arena is the most recent, modern e inovative infrastruture of the Fair and Expositions Park of this algarvian city and its born of the necessity to allow the Algarve to have a polyvalent pavilion able to accept reunions, banquets and other corporate events, such as release of brands or products, fairs, congresses and even sports and musical events of big scale.

Ponta do Altar Lighthouse

The name Ponta do Altar has its origin in an ancient pre-historic altar placed in this area, that the erosion caused to fall ro the sea.

Place geographially positioned between the Torrado Beach and the Caneiros Beach, has a lighthouse built in 1893, that actually is automatized and is remotely controled from the Cabo de S. Vicente (Sagres) Lighthouse.

Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church - Ferragudo

Located in top of a hill, over the population, overlooking the river, visíble from Portimão, the Fort and the road that access the Village, has a huge atrium where you can enjoy wonderful views over the river and the mouth of Arad and the city of Portimão. Flowery alleys of traditional urban fabric.
Architectural structure of a typical country church. In the altars of the fourteenth century, a worthy array of images of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In the sacristy there is a double-sided (Our Lady, the Crucifixion) possibly from the fifteenth century and a sixteenth-century São Sebastião. Collection of "ex-votos" of sailors and fishermen, painted in a "naïf" style describing the miracles of the patron.
"Ex-votos" - painted, drawn or written, of various dimensions, existing in various churches in the country, that besides evoking his constant miracles are a strong testimony of the popular art of this country, and in this case of the fishermen and sailors that ordered them.

Portimão Municipal Theatre and 1º de Dezembro Square

Neoclassical style palace also known as Sárrea Garfias Palace, with baroque reminiscences, built in the late eighteenth century. On December 11, 2008 was opened in space formerly occupied by the palace, the TEMPO (Portimão Municipal Theatre), a modern construction that respects in large part the facade of the old building.

Portimão Main Church

Exemplar building of the portuguese late gothic, that searches influence in the model of Mosteiro da Batalha, by intermediary of the que busca influência no modelo do mosteiro da Batalha, by intermediary of the "canteiros" that worked by that time in the Silves Cathedral. Its construction was sponsored by the first grantee of Portimão, D.Gonçalo Vaz de Castelo Branco. It has 3 naves, 4 legs and head tripartite. The work went on during the century XVI, undergoing major operations after the earthquake of 1755

Colege Church and Diogo Gonçalves Museum

Sent to build by the gentleman Diogo Gonçalves in the corner of the current Commerce Street, in the XVII / XVIII centuries, the Jesuit College is a building with whose facade of rigid lines is decorated by three bodies, representing the highest at the entrance of the church, whose nave is one of the largest in its kind built in the Algarve.
All the altars are from the XVI century, gilded and richly decorated. From the Renaissance period we highlight the image from the Blessed Virgin and Child (sixteenth century). Other images worthy of careful consideration such as Our Lady of Mercy and the Lord of the Afflicted, decorate the interior. The crucifix of Jesus of Miracles, of the seventeenth century, is prominently displayed. In this building you can still find the Diogo Gonçalves Museum.

Municipal Market

In the Municipal Market you can find areas of fish, butchers, agricultural products, delis, flower shops, bakeries, a zone for producers and the sanitary facilities. In the market area is also a veterinary office, two areas of cold( one for the fish and other for the agricultural products), one zone for the comercialization of ice, an area of packaging for butchers, as weel as some reserved spaces.

School Farm

Located in Aldeia Nova da Boavista, this new space of leisure and teacher training is mainly intended to approximate the youngest of the countryside, through contact with the animal kinds and plant species.

Occupying an area of 2 acres, divided into distinct zones of cultivation, animal shelter, one area of lake, green areas and leisure, the School Farm of Portimão recriates a rural farm.
It was designed not only different exterior spaces that allow a direct contact with the Nature, but also a support building with multipurpose rooms to create workshops, among other activities. The building also offers the cafeteria service and counts with the support of a store.
In the farm is still possible to find a vegetable garden, a space with aromatic herbs, several trees such as Orange Tree, árvores diversas como a laranjeira, a pomegranates, or quince, and also cows, donkeys, sheep, pigs, birds, rabbits among other species of animals that are characteristic in a farm.
Between May and September the School Farm will be functioning from Tuesday to Friday between 9:00 and 19:30, and at Saturdays Sundays and Holidays between 10:00 and 19:30. From October to April, it will be open for public from Tuesday to Friday between 9:30 and 17:30 and Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays between 10:00 and 17:30. Santa Catarina Fort:

The Fort of St. João do Arade, also known as Castle of St. João do Arade, or simply as Castle of Arade, in the Algarve, located in the village and parish of Ferragudo, Lagoa municipality, district of Faro in Portugal.

Dominant over the town and the river mouth, his elevation divides the two beaches: Praia Grande and Praia da Angrinha. Cooperated with the Fortress of Santa Catarina, which was in the opposite side in Portimão, in defending the Arade estuary.

Birdwatching in the Algarve

The Algarve is a touristic destination often visited by tourists for its beaches and the excelent golf courts that exist in this region, however the Algarve has many more riches that are unknown to the general population. One of those riches is the wildlife diversity, wich allows to do Birdwatching.
This region has a wide variety of exotic birds and several Habitats a fiew miles apart from each one. That allows a bird watcher to see completely different species in less than a hour from each habitat, like the cases of Monchique and Costa Vicentina, or Ria Formosa and Barrocal.
